The Galbraiths in the UK
We are church planting missionaries with Baptist Mid-Missions, serving on the field of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. For short, we usually say the “UK”. We have been serving with BMM since 2001 and in Scotland since 2004. We are still working in our first church plant in Westhill, a suburban community outside of Aberdeen (Scotland’s third largest city).
We have three children: Trevor, a student at Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, Iowa; Tiimothy, just finished with high school and working for a year to earn money towards college; and Heather who is in the equivalent of 9th grade. All three are an important part of our ministry. We are so thankful that the boys’ desire is to continue in ministry themselves and be involved in church planting or the pastorate here in the UK.
Glen was born in Newmarket, England on 7 June 1969. Glen’s family moved to America when he was 10. Glen accepted Christ as his Saviour in 1983 at Whispering Cedars Baptist Camp. He attended Faith Baptist Bible College where he met Tammy. They were married in 1991. Glen has worked along side his home pastor at Karen Street Baptist Church as youth leader, adult Sunday school teacher, song leader, etc. He also worked with a church plant in Mount Vernon, Washington along side his father-in-law. After working in these church ministries as well as in the secular work place, Glen became the full-time program director at Whispering Cedars Baptist Camp. After serving there for two years, Glen and Tammy were lead to the mission field where they are currently serving with Baptist Mid-Missions.
The United Kingdom is a single Kingdom composed of 4 different countries. We have a central government in London, with each country also having certain legislative rights. We share the same money (the British Pound), the same passport, the same Olympic team, the same Queen and Prime Minister. There is no border control between each country. It is similar to travelling between states in America. However, each country has its own national football team, national and historic identity, and in some cases, its own language.
Scotland is the top one third of the island of Great Britain and joined the Untied Kingdom in 1707. It has a population of 5 million. Scotland is divided into lowlands and highlands, each with its own culture. English is the official language, but Gaelic is widely spoken in the western highlands. Other dialects of English can be found such as Scots and Doric. Of course there is nothing quite like Glaswegian.
England encompasses the majority of the island of Great Britain both in size and population. The population of England is 51 million with 84% of its people in and around its capital, London. England itself is also made up of very distinct and culturally different regions. London has its own culture and dialect and is vastly different from what you would find in Cornwall (in the south) or Yorkshire in the North.
Wales is a small, mountainous country on the west side of Great Britain. It has a population of about 3 million. Both Welsh and English are equally the official languages of Wales. Wales has been part of the United Kingdom since 1535.
Northern Ireland is on a separate Island from Great Britain. It shares the island with Ireland, a completely different country. Northern Ireland has been slowly gaining more independence from the UK but its people have chosen to remain in the United Kingdom in spite of a violent minority who seek to force complete independence.
Tammy was born in California on 17 March 1970. She grew up in Washington state where she accepted the Lord as her saviour during Sunday school in 1975. Tammy gave her life to God for full-time Christian service while attending Bible camp as a teenager. In preparation for whatever future ministry God would give her, Tammy attended Faith Baptist Bible College. After completing her degree in Elementary Education, Glen and Tammy were married. Tammy taught at Community Christian School and worked in other secular fields including teaching at a college, working as a computer trainer for a law firm and various other jobs. It had always been Tammy’s heart’s desire to be a pastor’s wife; she just never thought it would be in a foreign country. However, along with Glen, Tamm y knew she too was called into missions to serve the Lord in the United Kingdom.
Westhill Baptist Church began in the fall of 2004. After several weeks of only the Galbraiths in attendance, the first visitors walked through the door. Over the following 7 years there have been more than 15 people who have come to the Lord. The church has grown from a group of 5 to as many as 30 in regular attendance. As with all churches, it has had its ups and downs but God is working in people’s hearts and lives and the gospel is going for in northeast Scotland.
